2022 Application Consultation overview

Blog

Posted 4 years ago

Consultation approach

We launched our public consultation in Autumn 2021, setting out our initial ideas for the future of Borough Triangle. We have continued to engaged since then as we have developed the proposals further – with the final pre-application consultation in May-June this year in which the detailed proposals were presented.

We used a mix of digital engagement and in-person activities to provide a range of opportunities for local people to engage. This included publishing 20 blogs and 17 associated surveys on the website and holding 5 door-knocking sessions, 6 pop-ups at Mercato Metropolitano/Newington Gardens and 2 drop-in exhibitions at Mercato Metropolitano.

We used a range of tools to promote our consultation, including:

  • Printed newsletters to c. 8,500 addresses
  • Adverts in Southwark News
  • Letter to c. 500 near neighbours
  • E-newsletter updates to mailing list (c. 300 people)
  • Social media adverts – audience c. 20,000
  • Emails to political and community stakeholders

Stakeholder engagement

In addition to the wider public consultation outlined above, we held a series of meetings with local stakeholders throughout the pre-submission period, including ward councillors, residents’ groups and community organisations:

These meetings were constructive and allowed us to identify key issues and opportunities to consider as we developed our proposals. We look forward to continuing to engage with interested stakeholders as we move towards a decision on the application.

Your feedback

Over 6,500 people had visited the website by the time we submitted the application and we received a total of 1,053 feedback responses via online surveys and paper forms.

We engaged with over 800 people during door-knocking sessions on the Rockingham and Scovell estates; pop-up sessions in the area; a public webinar; and drop-in events at Mercato Metropolitano.

Key themes of feedback from the community included:

  • Support for green spaces and increased biodiversity in the area
  • Questions regarding the proposed height and massing of the buildings and potential impacts on neighbours
  • Support for new homes – including affordable housing – and questions in relation to the amount of affordable housing
  • Questions regarding commercial uses and the future of Mercato Metropolitano

The Statement of Community Involvement provides a fuller summary of the feedback themes raised and how we have responded to these.

We’d like to thank everyone who shared their feedback on the proposals for the future of Borough Triangle. We have now submitted a planning application (under reference 22/AP/3149) to Southwark Council. You can find out more about the application through the ‘Application Summary’ blog here. This has an overview of our proposals, as well as links to further information and a survey with which you can share your views on the application.
